The Xtra Mart convenience store on Wakelee Avenue was robbed Monday by a man armed with a box cutter-type weapon, police said.
The individual — a white male between the ages of 30 and 40 years old with a greyish mustache and stocky build — is suspected of eight similar robberies in the region.
There were no injuries reported in the Ansonia crime.
The man walked into the store at about 11:15 p.m. and ordered the clerk to hand over the cash from the register.
The clerk handed over an unspecified amount of money, then watched the suspect run east on Church Street.
A police dog tracked a scent to the area of 54 Church St., but the suspect wasn’t found.
The suspect is between 5 feet 9 inches and 6 feet tall. He was wearing a maroon, hooded sweatshirt, blue jeans and white sneakers, police said.
The suspect has targeted convenience stores in the past. He has always worn a hooded sweatshirt, although the color has varied. In this case, the suspect walked into the store and bought an item prior to coming back in to commit the robbery.
