Man Tased After Derby Dispute

A Derby man faces eight criminal charges after a violent encounter on Caroline Street Saturday.

Police said they received a report of a domestic dispute in progress at a residence at about 8:15 p.m.

Police allege Ernest Barr, 49, assaulted three people — his girlfriend, his girlfriend’s daughter and the daughter’s boyfriend.

The boyfriend was hit in the head with a pair of scissors, police said, causing a minor wound. The daughter tried to intervene by grabbing the scissors Barr was holding, police said. She sustained a cut to her hand.

Barr’s girlfriend was allegedly struck with a chair.

Barr left the residence and was found a short time later on Bridge Street in Shelton. Barr told police that he had been injured in the altercation. 

While being interviewed by officers, he became aggressive, which let to him being Tased,” Lt. Sal Frosceno said.

Barr was then taken to Griffin Hospital.

Police charged him with two counts of second-degree assault, which are felonies.

He was also charged with two counts of third-degree assault, two counts of first-degree reckless endangerment, one count of second-degree threatening and one count of resisting arrest. Those charges are misdemeanors.

He was arraigned in Superior Court in Derby Monday and is due back May 27.
