Mattress Professionals Move To Main Street

A Sleepy’s mattress store opened at 403 Main St. on Friday, May 25. The building formerly housed Hollywood Video, which closed its doors after going into bankruptcy in March 2010.

During Memorial Day weekend, the cars of parade-goers filled the plaza’s parking lot, giving the new store an opportunity to get noticed. While the store has not been fairly busy since its opening, Sleepy’s Sales Manager Scott Purcell says he is hoping that business will pick up soon.

“Only time will tell,” Purcell said, “but it seems to be a good location.”

Sleepy’s is leasing the building from Glen Equities Limited, a private real estate agent located in Manhattan.

Its president, Alan Schwartz, said the building had been on the market for a few months before negotiations with the “mattress professionals” started.

Sleepy’s is the world’s largest mattress retailer, according to its website. This is the second national retailer to take over an empty space in the shopping plaza within the last three months.

In February, Aaron’s, a discount furniture and appliance chain, opened in the storefront where Better Bedding used to be.

Other stores located in the plaza include Big Y, Bob’s, and Marshalls.

Glen Equities has another vacant storefront in the same plaza, between Marshalls and the Ansonia Social Security office. This space is 9,100 square feet and also available for lease.
