Oxford 5K To Benefit Plaque Restoration Effort

Looking for a fun place to run (or walk) a 5K course on Memorial Day? Oxford Parks and Recreation is hosting its 4th Annual Memorial Day 5K Freedom Run on Monday, May 28 at 8 a.m.

And this year part of the proceeds will go to a fund started to replace stolen plaques at war monuments in three Valley communities.

Race Director Fran Teodosio said Tuesday that the first $500 raised by the race will go to the Valley Community Foundation, which will match the funds, meaning a total of $1,000 will go to the Veterans Plaques Restoration Fund. Donations to the fund can be made at any time by following this link.

The remainder of the proceeds will be provided to the American Legion David S. Miles Post 174 in Oxford.

The race starts at the Oxford Town Hall, 486 Oxford Road and goes south on Rt 67 to the Pleasant Valley Shopping Center and back to Town Hall.

The course has been USATF-certified. All net proceeds will go to our own members of the active and veteran military.

Walkers are also welcome to participate in the 2‑mile fitness walk. The cost to participate is $25 per person if you register in advance.

If you prefer to register at the event on the day of the race, the cost will be $30.

Veterans and active military personnel may participate for FREE! Wheelchairs and Baby Joggers are also welcome! The first 500 registrants will receive a commemorative race T‑shirt. Prizes will be awarded in various categories.

Due to its overwhelming popularity, we will also once again hold the Kids Rock Hopper Fun Run. Kids ages 5 – 12 will run from the Town Hall to Oxford Center School and back for a total of a half-mile. The Rock Hopper Fun Run registration fee is $10. The first 100 kids to register will receive fun gifts as well as a T‑shirt, thanks to the generous sponsorship from Naugatuck Valley Savings and Loan!

To register, go to www.fasttracktiming.com.

For more info please go to the official race website or call the Oxford Parks and Recreation office at 203 – 888-2543, Ext 3041.

Vets and active military personnel must call the Parks and Rec office to register.

Come one, come all! Get a little exercise and support our Veterans on Memorial Day! After the race, hang around for the always exciting, annual Oxford Memorial Day Parade! What a great way to spend the morning with your family as we honor those who gave so much for our freedom!
