Memorial Walk On Sunday To Remember Derby Amateur Photographer

DERBY — A memorial walk to honor a late Derby man who was passionate for nature photography is happening this Sunday (June 4) at the Derby Greenway.

Event organizer Sharon Maxwell never met Charles Durishin, for whom the memorial walk is being held, but is looking forward to gathering with like-minded folks who found Durishin’s photography so enjoyable.

Maxwell is one of hundreds of people who came to know Durishin, 68, and his bird and animal photography captured along the Greenway through his regular posts online via the NextDoor app. When she learned of Durishin’s passing on April 7, Maxwell was inspired to act.

I was struck by the fact that it’s all so temporary, this life that we take for granted,” Maxwell said. I regretted not asking Charles if I could accompany him on a walk and now, I was never going to get the chance to do it.”

The walk will kick off at 10 a.m. at the Derby Greenway, at the entrance near BJ’s Wholesale Club on Division Street. Maxwell said it will be an opportunity for all those who only knew Durishin remotely to get together and reflect on the joy his numerous pictures of bald eagles, cardinals, turtles and cranes brought to many.

Maxwell also encouraged people to consider making a donation in Durishin’s memory to the Connecticut Audubon Society.
