An Oxford resident quickly doused a roof fire at his historic home on Governors Hill Road Wednesday afternoon.
No one was injured, and the 1790 home at 89 Governors Hill Road escaped major damage.
The homeowner, Freddie Trede Jr., said he realized the fire had started and climbed out onto the roof to pour water on it.
Fire Chief Scott Pelletier said the fire started when a hot cinder from Trede’s fireplace escaped through the chimney and landed on the roof’s wooden shingles.
Trede said he was trying to take the chill out of the house by starting a fire in the fireplace.
“It’s built in 1790 and has no insulation,” Trede said.
Pelletier estimated the damage at only several hundred dollars.
The firefighters chopped through some of the roofing material, to make sure the fire was not burning internally.
Governors Hill Road was not closed to traffic during the response.
Trede said this was his second brush with building damage this year.
His 300-year-old barn was damaged by the winter snows, Trede said.
Just before 4 p.m., some of the firetrucks were leaving the scene because the situation was under control.
