Mold Closes Derby High School On Second Day Of School

DERBY — Derby High School and Little Raiders University will be closed Friday after elevated levels of mold was found in the Derby High School auditorium, Schools Superintendent Matthew Conway said in a message late Thursday.

Earlier this evening a message was sent informing us that mold was found in the auditorium at Derby High School,” Conway said in a message sent at about 9:45 p.m. After further consideration, due to the most recent discovery of mold on stored furniture in the area behind the stage, we will be closing the High School and LRU tomorrow Friday September 10, 2021 until further testing and remediation can be conducted.”

Derby High School has been dealing with a mold issue since last week. The building was given a clean bill of health Wednesday, and was open Thursday for the high school’s first day of the school year. The mold issue has pushed opening day from Tuesday to Thursday.

Testing will begin tomorrow at 6:30 a.m.,” Conway said in a message. ServPro will be in the building to begin remediation on Saturday through Sunday. Initial test results will not be available for 24 – 48 hours after being received by the lab. Post remediation testing will be conducted as needed based on the initial test results. We will share test results once they are available. We apologize for this interruption to the beginning of the school year and thank you for your patience while we address this concern.”

Little Raiders University is the district’s pre‑K program. It is housed in the high school building, but in a separate wing.
