More Than $10,000 Awarded To Shelton Students

Shelton High School held its 31st Annual Book and Achievement Awards Program as a school-wide celebration of student achievement on Thursday (May 16) in the school’s gymnasium.

Awards of $100 and under totaling over $10,000, as well as the university and college book awards and certificates of recognition, were presented to 155 students.

We believe it is important to gather as a learning community to recognize those students who have met the standards as stated in our mission statement,” said Headmaster Beth Smith, who opened the program speaking to the mission statement of the school requiring students to meet high academic and behavioral expectations.

Smith recognized and congratulated the staff, students, parents, and the community for working collaboratively to ensure that students meet these expectations.

She also thanked donors for their generosity which enables this program to continue.

Kathy Riddle, Guidance Curriculum Leader, welcomed honored guests.

Stavrous Koumbaros, Student Council President, led the crowd in the Pledge of Allegiance. Juniors Scott Sheldon and Emily Rogalin sang the Star Spangled Banner. Tyler Tice, senior class president, provided the welcome address. Chairman of the Board of Education, Mark Holden, and Superintendent of Schools, Freeman Burr, provided greetings.

Housemasters John Skerritt, Steven Swensen and James Colandrea announced the award recipients.

All of the award recipients have taken advantage of the many opportunities offered to them at Shelton High School and in their community.

They have displayed qualities of scholarship and have demonstrated the important traits of leadership, citizenship, and community service.

The award recipients were nominated for these awards by their teachers, school counselors, administrators, coaches and club advisors.

The evening Awards Program will be held on Tuesday, June 4, in the SHS auditorium.
