Naugatuck 41, Derby 18

Naugatuck defeated Derby 41 – 18 Saturday in a game marred by Greyhound penalties and personal fouls.

Refs called 16 penalties on Naugatuck for 155 yards. Naugatuck also collected six personal fouls. One Greyhound was kicked out of the game for mouthing off to a referee.

There was also some sideline ugliness as fans berated officials. The Red Raiders were called for three penalties.

On the field, Naugatuck was just too much.

Naugatuck methodically went up and down the length of the field depositing the ball into the end zone six times — three rushing touchdowns and three passing touchdowns.

On the first play of the game Derby seemed to have the answer on how to slow down the lighting quick Greyhounds as they were called for too many men on the field. That initial drive resulted in a punt that Rueben Berger returned 40 yards to set up the Hounds deep in Red Raider territory.

It started in the first quarter with Naugatuck’s Andrew Cirino going 24 yards for a touchdown. After a punt on the next series, Erich Broadrick (three touchdown passes) tossed a five- yard scoring strike to Jake Yourison.

The Hounds were off and running with a 14 – 0 advantage at the 5:37 mark on the first quarter.

Derby responded when Ray Kreiger fired a 36-yard touchdown pass to Jacob Tomczak to cut the deficit at 14 – 6 toward the end of the opening quarter.

Shawn Freeney barreled in from 18 yards out to push the Hounds out to a 21 – 6 advantage. Broadrick utilized the services of senior wide out Tyler Conklin to haul in a big pass play that resulted in a touchdown completing a fourth and goal to up the margin to 28 – 6 just before the half.

Tomczak and Jon Haydu made interceptions on defense in the first half but it did little to slow down the fast and furious Greyhounds.

At 6:15 remaining in the third quarter Kreiger hooked up with Tomczak on a fourth-and-seven pass play to close the gap at 28 – 12.

Naugatuck came right back and struck again when Broadrick found Conklin on a slant for a touchdown strike to complete a third and goal from the 19 to up the margin at 34 – 12.

Kreiger fired his third touchdown of the day completing a fourth-and-goal pass to Haydu to cut the deficit at 34 – 18 with 6:29 left in the game.

Naugatuck put the final tally on the board at 41 – 18 with Dashawn Wingate plowing in from three yards out after Berger latched on to a 56 yard pass form Broadrick.
