Firefighters responded to a house fire on Howard Avenue Jan. 26. No injuries were reported.

ANSONIATwo people were rescued from a house fire on Ansonia’s west side on Sunday afternoon (Jan. 26), fire Chief Alex Horjatschun said.

At about 3 p.m., firefighters received a 911 call reporting a fire at 67 Howard Ave. Firefighters arrived – some coming directly from the scene of a one-car accident that snapped in half a telephone pole on Woodbridge Avenue.

While firefighters were en route, the neighbors who placed the call went inside the house. They rescued a woman on the first floor and brought her to safety, Horjatschun said.

However, they told firefighters that there may have been two more people still inside. The fire spanned two floors in the rear of the house.

As the two civilians were rescuing one lady off of the first floor, they were telling me that there’s at least one more person on the second floor. Then we had reports that there were two brothers on the second floor,” Horjatschun said.

Firefighters conducted two searches of the second floor but found no one. In the basement, however, firefighters located one of the two brothers and rescued him.

The other brother turned out to not be home during the fire, Horjatschun said.

Assistant Fire Chief Anthony DeLucia said that putting the fire out was a fairly straightforward effort.

The back of the house was on fire, so our trucks got there, we stretched two handlines, our crews did searches,” DeLucia said.

The fire caused damage throughout the rear of the house, while smoke and water damage was found in the front of the house.

DeLucia said he didn’t believe there were any serious injuries from the fire, although the man rescued from the house was referred to EMS.

Firefighters from Derby and Seymour assisted in the operation. The cause and origin of the fire is under investigation.

Land records show that 67 Howard Ave. is a 2,060-square foot, wood frame, two-family home. It was built in 1900 and belongs to Dominic Santullo.
