New Assessor Hired In Ansonia

photo:ethan fryThe City of Ansonia will soon have a new tax assessor for the first time in nearly 30 years.

Marsha Benno, a lifelong Ansonia resident and current deputy assessor for the City of Milford, will begin work April 6, assuming the Board of Aldermen approves the appointment.

Benno replaces Marge Dzwonchyk, who retired this year after serving as the city’s assessor for 27 years.

Prior to her job in Milford, Benno was a property appraiser for the the City of Stratford.

The assessor is responsible every year for compiling the grand list of all of the taxable real estate in a municipality, which officials use to determine the tax rate at budget time.

This year, Ansonia’s grand list grew by just over $6 million, a welcome change from 2014 – 2015, when it fell by $7.5 million.

The job pays $75,575.

We’re going to take an aggressive approach to assessing people,” Mayor David Cassetti said Monday (March 16).
