New Winter Parking Rules Approved

The Board of Aldermen earlier this month approved new winter parking rules that will cut down on confusion and make it easier to clean up the snow on the streets, officials said.

Previously, the parking rules required drivers to switch the side of the street they parked on each month.

The new rules designate one side of the street for residents to park on for the entire winter. In a winter season that begins with an even-year December, cars must be parked on the even-side of the street throughout the entire winter.

This winter, December 2009, is considered an odd year. So cars must be parked on the side of the street where the odd-numbered houses are located.

Mayor James Della Volpe said that ice build-up on streets has damaged public works equipment in the past.

I think this (new ordinance) will eliminated the bulk of those problems,” Della Volpe said.

The Police Department has said the previous parking rules were also confusing for people and harder to enforce.
