No Changes So Far In Ansonia Recount

ANSONIA — The Election Day winners in the first and fourth wards for the Board of Aldermen remained the same after a recount Monday.

The third ward winners will probably remain the same, too, but election officials were having a hard time nailing down the final tally. They’ll count again starting about 6 p.m. Tuesday in Ansonia City Hall.

The recounts were automatically triggered in the three wards because the difference between some candidates was either 0.5 percent, or 19 votes.

The recount Monday in the First Ward Aldermen’s race resulted in the same winners as announced Nov. 5.

The winners are marked below in bold:

Democrat Nina Phipps — 286 votes
Democrat Gary Farrar Jr — 257
Republican Charles Stowe — 308
Republican Daniel King — 293

The same goes for the Fourth Ward:

Democrat Diane Stroman — 154
Democrat Rohan Brown — 131
Republican Anthony Spigarolo — 147

The trickiest race was Third Ward Alderman, where the final tally from the machine on Election Day differed from the results of two hand counts Monday — and the two hand counts ended in slightly different tallies.

Each count had Democrat Joseph Jeanette Jr. and Republican Joseph Cassetti winning the two available seats.

But the fact election officials couldn’t get consistent numbers was a cause for concern. The plan Tuesday is to contact the company that makes the electronic voting machines for guidance, then attempt another machine count or hand count Tuesday evening.

Monday’s recount started at 5 p.m. and ended about 9:30 p.m.

If the results stand, the political composition of the Ansonia Board of Aldermen will change from a 13 – 1 GOP majority to a 10 – 4 majority.
