No Classes At Derby High School Thursday

Derby High School will be closed again Thursday because power still hasn’t been restored to the building.

The school district posted the following note on its website Wednesday afternoon:

Derby High School will be closed Thursday, September 1, until electrical power has been restored.

High school administrators, faculty and staff should not report to work on Thursday-with the exception of 12 month custodial and clerical personnel.

Teachers who work in both the Derby High School and Derby Middle School should report to the Derby Middle School at the beginning of the day Thursday.

Outside athletic activities will proceed at Derby High School as scheduled. However, students and staff will not be able to enter the school building.

Also, Superintendent Stephen Tracy e‑mailed a photo of a tree deep in the woods off Coon Hollow Road behind the high school that is the source of the power failure:

This Darn Tree

Tracy said a crew from United Illuminating is supposed to inspect the tree and wires Thursday, but there is no word on when power will be restored.

Derby High School was supposed to open Tuesday. The rest of the schools in the district opened Wednesday.
