Police Wednesday confiscated the license of a 72-year old woman after she drove her car into the front window of Oxford Wine and Spirits at Tommy K’s Plaza.
There were no injuries reported.
According to the police report, the accident occurred shortly after 10:30 a.m. as Duru Gidwana of West Haven pulled up to the front of the store.
Instead of hitting the brake, police said Gidwana pushed the gas pedal, causing the car to jump the curb and strike the building. The impact tore the front bumper from the car and caused other front end damage.
The store, owned by Gidwana’s son, David, sustained a shattered large glass window and storefront damage.
David Gidwana told police that he was sitting just a few feet from where the car struck the window and partially entered the building.
The impact sounded like a gunshot, he said.
Gidwana and her son were able to move the car into the parking lot before police arrived.
Police issued Gidwana a verbal warning for failure to drive right, and confiscated Gidwana’s license, which will be sent to the Department of Motor Vehicles, police said.
Gidwana is required to submit evidence of current fitness, meaning a physical examination by a doctor, or be retested to regain her license by DMV.
Officer Jim Burr said Gidwana did not appear to be disoriented.
“Hopefully this is a only a one time thing,” he said.
