ANSONIA — There were no injuries after a fire in a small manufacturing shop off Beaver Street Tuesday.
Ansonia Fire Department Chief Michael Eheman said the initial reports about the fire from the public to dispatch were unclear.
“It came in as an apartment building fire, and we had a very vague address,” Eheman said. “It came in as the corner of Jewett and Beaver.”
The building was actually behind a building that fronted Beaver Street, across the street from Jaworski Fuel Services.
“It was pretty easy to spot because there was heavy smoke back there,” Eheman said.
The fire was contained to the building’s roof line
The Ansonia Fire Marshal’s Office is investigating the cause and origin of the fire, but Eheman said a wood burning stove’s chimney was likely involved.

The roof of a manufacturing shop was badly damaged.
“They had a wood-burning stove in there with a chimney. It breached the chimney — somehow, someway,” Eheman said. “There was a lot of (flame) extension to the roof line. There were several layers of roofing so we had to cut it all out and knock the fire out.”
The fire department requested a representative from the state Department of Energy and Environmental Protection respond to the scene.
“There were a lot of unmarked containers inside the building, so they went in there to take a look and are working with the owner. I think everything was amicable at this point,” Eheman said.
Derby firefighters were also called to the scene as a rapid intervention team.
The call came in at 2:37 p.m. The fire was confirmed at 2:38 p.m.
