Two people escaped injury after a fire in their living room Sunday afternoon.
Derby Fire Marshal Phil Hawks said a woman was in the kitchen at 7 Donna Ave. when she smelled smoke in the house. She walked into the living room and saw an upholstered chair in front of a bay window on fire, along with the curtains behind it.
She grabbed a relative out of a bedroom and got out of the house, Hawks said.
Firefighters were dispatched to the single-family, ranch-style home at 5:42 p.m. They arrived on the scene at 5:46 p.m. and quickly extinguished the flames.
Hawks said he has an idea as to how the fire started, but not enough information to officially declare the cause. As of Monday morning the cause is “undetermined,” Hawks said.
Fire destroyed the chair and heat from the flames damaged other furniture in the home. The main floor in the house suffered extensive smoke and heat damage as well.
Firefighters checked to see if flames had made it into the walls or the ceiling, but the actual fire was contained to the area near the chair.
The family was not able to stay in the home last night. Click here to see how the incident was reported by Valley Indy Facebook readers.
