No Injuries In Shelton Kitchen Fire

Sprinklers knocked down a kitchen fire inside a first-floor residence at a downtown Shelton apartment building Monday evening.

There were no injuries.

Firefighters were initially dispatched to the building — The Ripton, an apartment building for senior citizens at 423 Howe Ave. — at 5:40 p.m. on a report of a general fire alarm.

Upon arrival, they discovered a kitchen fire in a first-floor apartment that had been knocked down by sprinklers, Shelton Fire Department Assistant Chief Paul Wilson said at the scene.

The resident of the apartment was able to leave without injury, Wilson said.

Heavy smoke remained after the fire was out, so firefighters ventilated the building and cleared its occupants until they deemed it safe to re-enter about 6:15 p.m.

Trucks from the Echo Hose and Pine Rock Park volunteer fire companies responded, with the city’s White Hills Volunteer fire company providing coverage for the rest of the city.

A truck from Derby’s Paugassett Hook & Ladder Company also responded, which is Howe Avenue protocol,” Wilson said. For anything downtown we bring in a second truck company.”
