DERBY — No injuries were reported after an overnight fire on Mason Street off Seymour Avenue.
The fire was reported at about 2 a.m. Wednesday at a multi-family house at 5 Mason St.
Derby Fire Marshal Phil Hawks is investigating the cause and origin.
Hawks and Lenart said it appears the fire started outside on a back porch in the rear of the structure, then spread into the attic.
Lenart said there was heavy fire damage to the attic, along with smoke and water damage throughout. Hawks said the second floor was damaged as well.
Hawks said he has not narrowed down a cause yet. He said the Red Cross was called to the scene to help six people who were displaced. That includes two people who lived on the first floor and four people who lived on the second floor.
Hawks noted the occupants were alerted to the danger thanks to smoke detectors, which allowed them to get out of the apartments.
Ansonia firefighters responded to the scene, and Shelton firefighters covered Derby in case of additional calls.
The house was at the corner of Mason Street and Seymour Avenue, not far from the Veterans Memorial building.
