No Injuries Reported In Derby Apartment House Fire

The scene at the intersection of Caroline and Third streets in Derby on Wednesday afternoon.

DERBY — There were no injuries reported after a fire Wednesday afternoon in a three-story apartment house at the corner of Third and Caroline streets in downtown Derby.

Derby Fire Marshal David Marcarelli’s office is investigating the cause and origin of the blaze.

Derby Storm Engine Co. Captain Jared Heon was the incident commander. He said no one was home in the building when the fire was reported by a neighbor at about 12:15 p.m.

A neighbor alerted 911 after seeing flames from across the street,” Heon said.

The bulk of the fire was on the third floor, in a corner of the structure between the third floor’s ceiling and the roof.

About 100 firefighters were on scene, including Derby, Ansonia and Shelton. Ambulance crews from the three communities were there, as were fire police.

It’s an older style building, typical of what we see in the Valley. Units made an aggressive, both interior and exterior, attack from the third floor and the roof, and were able to contain it to one portion of the structure,” Heon said.

The address was 2 Third St., not far from Derby City Hall.
