No ‘Spite Strips,’ Lawyer Says

Neighbors of a small unused portion of a city road are asking the city not to sell it.

Three residents with property adjoining the Middle Avenue extension have hired attorney Dominick Thomas to help get the city to turn over the abandoned road to them for a small amount.

The parcel in question is 50 feet wide and 300 feet long, Thomas said.

The property owners are concerned the sale of the land could mean another home is built on the strip of land or that the neighbors won’t be able to access their own property, Thomas told the Board of Aldermen at its meeting April 8.

Thomas said selling the abandoned road to anyone besides the adjoining property owners will make it a spite strip.”

The property is one of several the city is evaluating whether to sell.
