No Swimming At Indian Well State Park In Shelton

The public won’t be allowed in the water again this weekend at Indian Well State Park in Shelton, as officials try to find the cause of an oily sheen in the swimming area of the Housatonic River.

A spokesman for the state Department of Energy and Environmental Protection said officials will test the water again Monday (July 16) to determine the source and extent of the substance.

It was first noted on Tuesday and the swimming area has been closed as a precaution since,” Dwayne Gardner, the spokesman, said. The overall water quality in the swimming area is satisfactory but until we are able to determine the source of the substance, we are keeping the swimming area closed.”

The state has not received reports of the oily substance being seen at any private camps on Lake Housatonic, Gardner said.

The picnic and park areas remain open at Indian Well.
