DERBY – Police and the fire marshal are investigating a fire that was set deliberately in the Derby Parking Garage on Thompson Place on Wednesday (Oct. 2).
There were no injuries reported and the fire was contained to the small area where it was set, officials said.
Two workers from Tracy’s Garage noticed smoke coming from the top of the structure at about 2:20 p.m. At first it seemed that there was a vehicle fire on an upper deck.
Derby Fire Department Assistant Chief Louis Oliwa said firefighters found a blaze at the top of a vestibule in a third story stairwell.
“It’s a small wooden structure there to keep the rain out of the stairs. The guys stretched one line and knocked the fire down,” Oliwa said.
Derby Fire Marshal Dave Marcarelli said the fire was “definitely intentional.”
He said a few minors were seen coming from the garage when the smoke was first spotted.
Mayor Joseph DiMartino said a few young people could be seen on security cameras in the area where the fire was set.
Derby police are reviewing the footage.
