Officials Say Derby Road Will Trigger Economic Development

City officials held a ground-breaking ceremony Friday (Oct. 7) to mark the start of construction for a road that will eventually lead to the development of an industrial park in Derby.

The road will stretch from behind BJ’s on Division Street to the area of the Derby train station. It will not connect to the train station or Route 34.

Former DOT Property In Derby

Derby received $1.8 million in state and federal grants two years ago. The money covers construction of the road and the installation of utilities.

My thanks to Steve Grady at the U.S. EDA, Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro, Governor Malloy, Commissioner Catherine Smith, the CT Department of Economic and Community Development, and the Naugatuck Valley Comprehensive Economic Development Strategy (CEDS) for their ongoing commitment and support of this project,” Mayor Anthony Staffieri said in a prepared statement.

This new road and eventual park means the creation of new jobs and additional tax revenue for Derby and the region,” the mayor said.

The new access road is being constructed by Earthworks, Inc., a company based in Oxford.

DeCarlo and Doll designed the road and will work with Derby’s Office of Economic and Community Development in the construction administration of the project.

The road will go through a 26-acre property formerly owned by the state Department of Transportation.

According to a press release, Derby already has letters of intent from new and expanding businesses looking to move in.

The industrial park could produce upward of 200 new jobs and approximately $30 million in private investment, city officials said in a press release.
