Routine Calls For Help Trigger Drug, Alcohol Arrests

Two men were arrested for two separate drug offenses in Seymour on Sunday, after emergency responders showed up to help them in unfortunate situations. 

No Gas, But Several Crack Pipes

In one incident, police and the Seymour Fire Department responded to a broken down truck on Derby Avenue at 2:40 a.m.

The driver was trying to fill the truck with gasoline, but was pouring the gas all over the road instead, according to the police report. Police said the man appeared to be high on crack cocaine. 

Police said they found crack cocaine and several crack pipes inside the truck. 

Scott Yitts, 38, of Monroe, was charged with possession of cocaine and possession of drug paraphernalia. 

Seymour Fire Department cleaned up the gasoline spill and the truck was towed away from the scene. 

Yitts was released on a $2,500 bond and is scheduled to be arraigned at Superior Court in Derby on Oct. 18.

Fire Nets Drug Paraphernalia Arrest

In the other incident, fire and ambulance crews responded to a report of a pot on the stove” fire at a home on Smith Street. No time was provided.

While ambulance crews were treating a patient at the home, they found drug paraphernalia, prompting an arrest, police said. 

John Marella, 49, of 32 Smith Street, Seymour, was charged with possession of drug paraphernalia and possession within 1,500 feet of a school or housing complex. 

He was scheduled to appear at Superior Court in Derby Tuesday morning.

Flat Tire Leads To DWI Arrest

In a third incident on Oct. 7, a Bridgeport man was charged with driving while intoxicated after he got a flat tire while passing drivers on Route 67. 

Police said Juan Velasco, 28, of Savoy Street, was driving on Route 67 at about 6:45 p.m., and began using the road’s shoulder to pass cars. 

He hit a curb and popped one of his tires. 

Police pulled Velasco over and charged him with driving while intoxicated, operating a vehicle with a suspended license and failure to drive right. 

Velasco was released on a $5,000 bond and is scheduled to appear at Superior Court in Derby on Oct. 22.
