SHELTON – One firefighter was injured battling a fire in a multi-family house on Maple Street on Friday.
The firefighter’s injuries are not life threatening, according to a written statement posted to Facebook by the Shelton Fire Department.
No civilian injuries were reported. The fire marshal is investigating the cause and origin of the blaze.
The Red Cross was called to the scene to offer assistance to the people who were displaced.
Firefighters, EMS and police were sent to a residence in the area of Maple Street and Howe Avenue in downtown Shelton at about 7 p.m. The initial calls reported a fire at 10 Maple St. but a prepared statement did not provide a numbered address.
The first firefighters on scene saw heavy fire on the second and third floors of the structure. Four Shelton fire companies responded, along with an engine and ladder truck from the City of Derby.
The first and second floors of the house were occupied (the residents were outside the house when emergency crews arrived), and the third floor was vacant, according to the fire department.
It took about 45 minutes to get the fire under control, though firefighters had to deal with hidden pockets of fire in the small attic area.
Some of the siding on a neighboring home melted due to the intense heat from the fire.
Shelton Fire Department Assistant Chief Joe Constantino was the incident commander. Units were on the scene for about 90 minutes. Firefighters from Ansonia, Monroe and Stratford covered Shelton in case any other calls for service came in.
