Firefighters respond to a house fire on Howard Avenue on Monday evening.
ANSONIA – A fire on Howard Avenue in Ansonia hospitalized one person with minor injuries and left the first floor of a house uninhabitable on Monday (Sept. 9).
At 6:52 p.m., a call came in reporting a fire from 130 Howard Ave. Firefighters arrived and saw smoke coming from a rear bedroom on the first floor. The fire had not spread beyond that room, and firefighters were able to contain it there.
“We pulled one line off of our trucks and knocked it down relatively quickly,” said Ansonia Fire Department Assistant Chief Anthony DeLucia, who was on scene.
DeLucia said that he saw around five to seven people leave the building. One person from the house was sent to Griffin Hospital with minor injuries, and two cats were also rescued from the house.
DeLucia said the residents had closed the door to the bedroom after the fire started, which kept it from spreading further. He said firefighters left the scene around 8:30 p.m.
“They (firefighters) went in there quick, knocked it down, and nothing too crazy with this one,” DeLucia said.
Land records show that the 3,079 square foot, multi-family house was built in 1923. It is owned by 130 Howard Ave. LLC, a business registered in Stamford with principal Gjon Gjuraj. The fire marshal’s office confirmed that the house is renter-occupied.
DeLucia said that the first floor was left uninhabitable due to the fire, but that occupants of the second and third floors were able to return.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation. Seymour and Derby fire departments provided mutual aid.
