Oxford Approves ‘Realigned’ Project List For Schools

PHOTO: MELVIN MASONThe Board of Selectmen approved the realignment of a number of projects for the school district Wednesday.

The matter will move next to the Board of Finance, then a town meeting.

The school board voted to change its capital plan — that is, a list of construction projects and repairs — at its Tuesday meeting.

The money is already available for the projects. The school board is not asking for more money for the projects — simply to switch projects.

The move comes after the school board examined its plan and decided to better prioritize the projects, according to Rose McKinnon, chairman of the school board.

McKinnon said there are a number of projects bumped to the top of the list because they are considered health and safety issues.

Among the items:

  • $65,000 to replace a boiler at the Oxford Center School (the price is a rough estimate)
  • $16,480 to seal the basement and prevent moisture problems at building eight” at Oxford Center School
  • $5,700 for playground repairs the Oxford Center and Quaker Farms schools
  • $4,217.70 to move a fire alarm panel at Oxford High School. It was placed in a location that continually causes it to malfunction. The company that installed it says the warranty on the panel has expired and that it was installed to specification.”

It is important that we work together to resolve the district’s safety and health issues,” McKinnon wrote in a letter to the Board of Selectmen explaining the matter.

First Selectman Mary Ann Drayton-Rogers said the realignment does not call for adding funding to the capital improvement plan because voters already approved the final budget figure.

The Board of Finance is expected to discuss the realignment at its meeting on Monday.
