Oxford Arts Commission Announces March Exhibit

Oxford’s annual major juried OCAC Showcase Exhibit is scheduled for the weekend of May 16, 17 and 18 and the current art exhibit at Town Hall features a preview of some of the prints of paintings by the late Caryl Soucy that will be part of the planned silent auction that takes place during the Showcase weekend.

The auction is to raise funds for the Caryl Soucy Memorial scholarship, which is given to an Oxford student who displays talent in the arts.

In conjunction with this preview the current Town Hall Gallery exhibit also features photographs by last May’s winner of the Caryl Soucy Memorial Award, Marion Wakeman.

An artist and photographer, Marion is from a family of artists and photographers and learned her art through experience. While she can set up shots, she believes in capturing a moment rather than creating a moment.

Marion’s primary interest is in landscape photography. With her camera always ready she snaps pictures wherever she goes. Whether it’s lighting flashing during a storm as seen out the front door, flowers blooming, kids playing at the beach, animals in the zoo or a quiet path at the nature center, Marion sees her unique view of the world through her camera’s lens and shares the images with the viewer. Marion’s creative work including her original jewelry, miniature sculptures and photos have been sold at many craft shows. Her photographs have been shown at a Derby Day Art exhibit, at Brookfield Arts Commission’s Town Hall Gallery and in the OCAC juried Showcase Exhibit where she has twice been an award winner. Her photographs have also been purchased for display in corporate locations.

The current art exhibit will be in the Meeting room at Oxford Town Hall 486 Oxford Road, Oxford, CT 06478 and can be viewed during regular business hours 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday from March 1 through April 9.

The Showcase Exhibit and Silent Auction will be in May with a Meet the Artist Gala Opening Friday May 16 from 6 to 9 p.m. On Saturday May 17 and Sunday May 18 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. there will be a variety of activities all weekend including music, theater samples, artist demonstrations, gallery tours and workshops for adults and kids.

Ten prizes of over $1,000 in will be awarded. The entry deadline is April 18. Entry forms are now available online at www.oxfordculturalarts.org, from the OCAC email artgallery@oxfordculturalarts.org or to have one sent to you by mail phone 203 881‑6085.

Oxford Cultural Arts Commission’s mission is to promote, develop, and encourage artistic and cultural activities in the Town of Oxford and to foster an appreciation for, and widespread community involvement in, the arts in Oxford.
