Oxford Attic Fire Sends Residents To Relatives

JOHN DUKEResidents of a three-family Oxford residence on Great Hill Road are staying with relatives for the time being after an attic fire Monday rendered the house uninhabitable.

There were no injuries.

About 6:30 p.m. firefighters were sent to 162 Great Hill Road on a report of smoke coming from the attic, Oxford Fire Department Chief Scott Pelletier said Tuesday.

Firefighters discovered a fire in the attic, but had trouble actually getting to the blaze. They ended up cutting holes in the ceilings of the apartments to better battle the flames, the chief said.

Firefighters from Oxford’s three volunteer fire companies responded, as well as tankers from Southbury, Beacon Falls, Seymour, and Monroe, Pelletier said, because there were no hydrants in the area.

About 50 firefighters total responded, and were able to extinguish the fire within about a half-hour.

The residents of the house are all staying with relatives for the time being, the chief said, due to the damage wrought by the blaze.

At this time the house is uninhabitable,” Pelletier said. They need to do extensive electrical work to make building safe.”

Pelletier said the cause and origin of the blaze is under investigation.
