The Board of Selectman awarded contracts for a sewer extension and road improvements earlier this month.
The board also took action to fill an Economic Development Commission vacancy and appoint an Animal Control Department volunteer.
By a 2 – 1 vote the board awarded Reliable Excavating Co. of Danbury a $29,161.59 contract for a 141-foot sewer extension on Prokop Road in the Woodruff Industrial Park.
The extension will provide a sewer connection to the future home of Cast Global, a jewelry manufacturing business, which is currently under construction.
Services in the bid include traffic protection, trench excavation, installation of a 10-inch sewer pipe, temporary and permanent pavement repair and water pollution control.
The project is expected to be completed by early October.
Economic Development Director Herman Shuler said the sewer extension was part of the town’s contract with the developer to provide sewer access to the lot.
The selectmen also awarded a contract by a 2 – 1 margin for the Great Hill Road turning lane project to Laydon Industries, LLC of New Haven, for $69,975.
The Great Hill Road intersection with Route 67 is situated between Meadowbrook Estates, the Board of Education office and Great Hill Shopping Plaza, and has had many site line issues.
Changes to the intersection include the construction of a right hand turning lane on Great Hill Road.
Selectman Dave McKane recognized the area as a safety hazard and anticipates the road improvement will solve the issue.
“Hopefully the turning lane will alleviate the problem and make the area safer,” he said.
First Selectman Mary Ann Drayton-Rogers said the town would utilize a $90,000 Small Town Economic Assistance Program grant, which will cover the cost of the project and fund engineering fees.
Selectman Augie Palmer voted against using the grant, saying it was the responsibility of Meadowbrook developer Haynes Construction to improve the intersection.
Rogers said Haynes Construction’s contract during the construction of Meadowbrook Estates had expired and the company did not bid on the project.
“We applied for the grant, we are going forward with this and we feel this is necessary,” she said.
Town engineers will be meeting with Laydon Industries later this month for pre-construction planning.
The board also unanimously approved Robert Saracino to the EDC to fill a vacancy left by Melissa Wall on the seven-member board.
Saracino will begin his term immediately and will expire on Dec.31.
The board also appointed Melissa Franci as an assistant animal control officer volunteer.
Animal Control Officer Sandy Merry said in a letter to the board that the position is an addition to the current officers and will help with added responsibilities of the department.
Franci was scheduled to start Sept. 8.
