Oxford Budget Hearing Monday

COURTESY OXFORD PATCHOxford’s Board of Finance will hold a public hearing on the proposed town and school budgets at 7:30 p.m. Monday, at Quaker Farms School, 30 Great Oak Road.

The meeting will be held at 7:30 p.m. The public will have an opportunity to comment on the proposals.

The Board of Finance will then meet Tuesday (April 23) to discuss the public hearing and possibly make adjustments to the budget based upon the comments.

The spending plan, if passed as is, would see Oxford’s tax rate go from 24.1 mills to 24.88 mills.

That’s an increase of about 3.24 percent. So a resident with a house assessed at $200,000 currently pays $4,820 a year in property taxes and would pay $4,976 – or $156 more – if the current budget proposal is adopted.

After Monday, the next opportunity for the public to discuss the budget will be on Monday, May 6, during a town meeting, also at Quaker Farms School. During that meeting, the public will have an opportunity to make motions to cut the budget (they cannot request to put money in), and the budget will be adjourned to a referendum.

The proposed date for a referendum is Tuesday, May 14, from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. at Quaker Farms School.
