UPDATE: Oxford Debates Whether To Spend $3.1 Million On Athletic Complex

UPDATE: After 150 people packed a meeting room at the town hall Monday to discuss whether to build a $3.1 million athletic complex at Oxford High School, First Selectman George Temple issued a statement Tuesday saying he supports a town-wide referendum for the project.

I will support the residents because I have a great deal of confidence that people will see the wisdom of finishing the high school project,” said Temple, who said he still believes that the town was playing by all the rules” and that the matter could have been decided at a town meeting instead of referendum. He said that unfortunately it (a referendum) will slow down construction of the project.”

The Board of Finance meets at 7 p.m. Tuesday (July 10) in Town Hall to vote on its recommendation to the Board of Selectmen, which will meet at 8 p.m. Tuesday (July 10) to vote to set a town meeting and adjourn to a referendum vote in August.

Original post follows below:

More than 150 people packed a town meeting room at the Stephen B. Church Memorial Town Hall Monday night and discussed whether to build a $3.1 million athletic complex at Oxford High School, whether the project should be sent to voters at referendum and whether the town should invest in other projects, such as a new library, instead of the field.

The Oxford Board of Finance will vote tonight (July 10) on whether to recommend the project to the town’s Board of Selectmen.
