Oxford Gets Input on School Calendar

Parents and teachers in Oxford want to keep the school year the same, and dip into February vacation if too many snow days happen in the future.

Those are the results from a survey the school district conducted this month as it sets its calendar for next year.

The snow days during the 2010-11 school year prompted Oxford to to cancel February vacation and a scheduled day off in March to make up the lost time.

The school administration consulted with parents and teachers this month to see if they’d like to do something different in the future.

The possibilities for snow day security included:

  • Canceling February vacation again if needed
  • Canceling April vacation, instead, if needed
  • Build extra days into the school year in August to cushion for snow days

In the future, if we get excessive snow days, the community wants to take it out of the February vacation,” Superintendent of Schools Edward Malvey said this week.

The school board expects to vote on a calendar for 2011 – 2012 at its meeting next month.

The plan is to allow as many as six snow days to run into June until chipping away at the February vacation.

As it stands, the draft proposal for the new school year calendar would have classes beginning on Aug. 31 and the last day on June 14.

Vacation periods would include the week between Christmas and New Year’s Day, with a week in February and a week in April.

The total number of school days for students is 182. The state only requires 180 days.

About 750 parents and 133 teachers responded to the district’s survey, Malvey said.
