Oxford High School students will get to meet their new principal — Frank Savo, Jr. — Wednesday morning.
Savo will be at the high school before the start of school greeting the students on their first day.
He will officially start as the new principal on Sept. 13 — after being hired by the Board of Education last week to fill a vacancy.
Interim Superintendent James Connelly said Savo stood out from other candidates because of his “varied experience.”
Savo was chosen from a pool of more than 20 candidates, Connelly said.
Savo is currently a “house” principal at Trumbull High School, overseeing more than 700 students. Oxford High School has about 630 students.
Savo’s other experience includes Dean of Students in Trumbull, a science teacher in the state’s vocational/technical system, a science and physical education teacher in Bridgeport schools and a part-time athletic director, Connelly said.
“He’s had varied experience — 29 years experience in secondary education,” Connelly said of Savo. “He certainly won’t have a big learning curve at all.”
Savo will replace Frank Samuelson, who helped open the high school a couple years ago and retired at the end of the year last year.
During the transition, assistant principal Glenn Lungarini has been in charge, Connelly said.
Savo will make $130,292 a year. He will divide his time between Oxford High School and Trumbull High School until his official start date of Sept. 13.
