Oxford Man A Suspect In Two Crimes

A 34-year-old man already accused of an attempted burglary in Shelton was charged Tuesday with breaking into a house in Seymour.

Shelton police earlier this month charged Keith Karlac, 34, of Oxford, with second-degree attempted burglary, a felony, in connection to a Jan. 8 break-in.

Police said Karlac kicked in the basement door of a residence on Cherokee Trail, where he was interrupted by a resident inside the house, according to Shelton Detective Ben Trabka.

Karlac fled the scene empty handed, Trabka said.

The resident, an acquaintance of the Karlac’s, recognized him and identified him as a suspect to authorities.

Police obtained a warrant and arrested Karlac Jan. 13.

Karlac is also a suspect in a Jan. 8 break-in at a residence on South Benham Road in Seymour. That burglary is believed to have happened sometime before the Shelton burglary, Seymour Capt. Paul Beres said.

In the Seymour case, Karlac allegedly broke into the residence and stole money and jewelry, among other items, Beres said.

Investigators in Shelton and Seymour contacted each other.

We learned another department was looking at him for a burglary,” Beres said. We compared notes and developed [Karlac] as a suspect.”

Shoe prints tie Karlac to each break-in, Trabka said.

Seymour police charged Karlac with third-degree burglary, third-degree conspiracy to commit burglary, second-degree larceny and second-degree conspiracy to commit larceny — all felonies. He was also charged with second-degree criminal mischief, a misdemeanor.

Seymour police charged Karlac Tuesday at Superior Court in Derby, where he was answering to the charge already lodged in Shelton.

Karlac is being held on bonds totaling $98,500. His is due in court again Feb. 23.
