OXFORD — The Oxford Pop Warner 7U Rookie Tackle team achieved a historic milestone this season, winning the first-ever Red Conference Championship in Northern Connecticut Pop Warner history. The team’s outstanding performance didn’t stop there — they went on to finish as State Champion Runners-Up, closing their remarkable season with an impressive 8 – 2 record.
This trailblazing accomplishment not only cemented Oxford’s place in youth football history but also showcased the program’s commitment to excellence, teamwork, and character. Adding to the celebration, Oxford Pop Warner was honored with the 2024 Sportsmanship Award by the Western CT Football Officials Association. This prestigious award is presented annually to one program that exemplifies integrity, respect, and exemplary conduct on the field.
“This season has been unforgettable,” said head coach Floyd O’Connor. “Our players worked tirelessly, demonstrated incredible resilience, and showed what it means to play with heart. Winning the Red Conference Championship was historic, but being recognized for our sportsmanship is just as meaningful — it reflects the values we strive to instill in our athletes.”
The team’s success was a result of dedication both on and off the field from players and coaches. Coach O’Connor was joined by a talented coaching staff, including Gerry Danso, Scott Schultz, Rich Gonzalez, and Mike Pryde, who together mentored and motivated the players to excel at every level.
Oxford’s youngest tackle team inspired everyone with their commitment, drive, and team first approach. This group of 2nd and 3rd grade boys were truly remarkable. The team consists of Ollie Angelovic, Brayden Danso, Ben Florin, Noah Gonzalez, Jaxson Larsen, Bryce Newkirk, Wyatt Payne, Matthew Pikul, Christopher Porto, Theo Schultz, Arlo Shaw, and Brody Wheeler.
The championship-winning season brought the Oxford community together, with parents, fans, and supporters rallying behind the team. The recognition for sportsmanship further underscores the program’s focus on fostering a positive and respectful environment for all participants.
“We are incredibly proud of what these boys have accomplished,” said parent Allyson Danso. “This season was about more than just winning games — it was about developing character, building friendships, and making memories that will last a lifetime. We are so lucky to be part of a Pop Warner organization that truly prioritizes the players’ development and safety over winning.”
