Oxford Schools Ponder 4 Percent Increase

The Board of Education is developing a budget request for 2011 – 2012 that could represent a 4 percent increase over the current year.

That would be a status quo budget, with no new programs and no new hiring, said Business Manager Rosemary Hanson, after distributing a draft copy of the spending plan last Tuesday.

The plan is still being developed by the Board of Education and awaits final approval before moving forward to the Board of Finance.

It is running behind schedule.

The Board of Education during its meeting last Tuesday voted to formally request a two-week extension for turning the spending plan over to the Finance Board.

The draft budget shows a request of $26.45 million, up four percent from $25.41 million the current year.

The budget would be higher, 7.94 percent higher, if not for miscellaneous grants, a job fund grant and other money that comes into the district from outside sources and total hundreds of thousands of dollars, the draft budget shows.

The draft budget shows the largest single increase is for athletics, going to $466,166 from $377,107 in the current year, a 23.62 percent increase.

The draft shows the smallest increase is in central office expenses, up to $586,782 from $573,504, a 2.32 percent increase.
