Oxford Sets Groundbreaking For Athletic Complex

Note: Oxford Town Hall sent out this press release Thursday night, after voters approved the borrowing of $3.1 million to build an athletic complex at Oxford High School.

First Selectman George R. Temple announced Thursday night that now that the referendum for the proposed $3.1 million athletic complex at Oxford High School has passed there will be a formal ground-breaking ceremony.

The ground-breaking will be held behind Oxford High School, 61 Quaker Farms Road, at 2 p.m. on Monday, Aug. 20.

Expected are members of the Board of Selectmen, Board of Finance, school officials and the members of the Oxford High School Athletic Fields Construction Committee.

The issue went to referendum after many residents said they supported the project but wanted to see it to go to a referendum.

The vote Thursday was YES: 1,321 … NO: 820. About 25 percent of those registered to vote came out to vote.

Temple said he had confidence that people in town were in favor of the proposal and saw the wisdom of finishing the high school project. He said the project will avail itself to residents of all ages for a minimal cost, or on the average about 9 cents a day.

The town expects to get some reimbursement on the project, which includes an artificial turf multi-purpose field, synthetic running track, bleachers, lighting and other improvements.

It is hopeful the complex will be completed for spring activities.
