Oxford’s Drayton-Rogers Won’t Seek Third Term

Mary Ann Drayton-Rogers announced Wednesday she will not be seeking a third term as Oxford’s First Selectwoman.

The Democrat cited personal reasons in her decision not to run.

She did an awful lot of good work for Oxford, she’s a tough act to follow,” said Oxford Democratic Town Committee chairwoman Carol Georgette.

The video shows Drayton-Rogers the night of Nov. 3, 2009, after winning her second term.

Her announcement was made at the end of Wednesday’s Board of Selectmen meeting. Drayton-Rogers said a goal was to become First Selectwoman. The goal was achieved — and it was time to move on.

During her two terms as First Selectwoman, the town made open space purchases and made economic development a priority.

A new high school opened under her watch. She lobbied for affordable housing regulations in town, despite heated political opposition.

Drayton-Rogers’ term has also been marked by constant bickering between town Democrats and Republicans.

Oxford, the fastest-growing town in Connecticut, is arguably the most politically contentious in the Valley.

Georgette said the Democrats have potential Selectmen candidates.

We’ll find someone, to carry on, find someone just as tough to run next time,” Georgette said.

Republican Selectman David Yish said he is not aware of any candidates from his party who have officially decided to throw their hats into the ring.

Former First Selectman August Palmer III told the Valley Indy earlier this year he’s considering running again.

He said Wednesday he’s still on the fence.

(Drayton-Rogers’ announcement) makes any decision I would make a little faster, because other people will be interested in running,” Palmer said.
