Plea Deal Offered To Woman Accused of Mugging Derby Senior Citizen

The state’s attorneys office has offered a plea agreement to the woman accused of mugging a 91-year-old Derby resident and committing a string of daytime burglaries in the Valley.

The details of the offer made to Amber Belade were not revealed during her brief court appearance Tuesday.

However, at Belade’s last court date her attorney indicated she would face some jail time.

Her court case has been continued until Dec. 2.

We would like some time to consider the offer,” her attorney, Joseph Jaumann, said Tuesday.

Belade, 23, is accused of committing a string of daytime burglaries in Shelton and Derby in April and May with her boyfriend, Collin McCarthy.

McCarthy is next due in court on Dec. 14.

Fairfield police also arrested Belade for burglary and larceny charges.

Police said on May 3, Belade ran up to an elderly woman walking along Chatfield Street and grabbed her purse, police said. The woman, Francis Falcioni, was knocked to the ground in the process.

Belade got away with about $40 in cash and later threw the purse by the Route 8 on-ramp at Emmett Avenue in Derby.

Falcioni suffered cuts and several strained muscles. She could not walk without a cane for more than a month, her family said.

Falcioni’s daughter, Robin Smith, said she hopes that Belade serves the maximum amount of time in prison.

I hope there’s no deal,” Smith said. It’s not just one person (who was affected). It was a string of people. I feel she should do the full extent possible.”
