Police investigate a fatal crash that occurred Sept. 23 at the intersection of Bridge Street and Main Street in Ansonia.

Ansonia police charged a 24-year-old man Dec. 31 in connection to a fatal crash on Main Street.

Zachary Mercer is due in court Jan. 14 to answer charges of misconduct with a motor vehicle, reckless driving, operating a vehicle with out of state plates, and failure to obey a traffic control.

The charges come after an investigation that started Sept. 23 after Mercer crashed into a vehicle being driven by 78-year-old Garrett Dalton of Ansonia.

Dalton, a U.S. Army veteran and grandfather, died as a result of his injuries.

During the investigation of the accident detectives learned that Mercer’s vehicle had been previously listed as a salvage vehicle and did not pass an inspection to be registered in the State of Connecticut, so Mercer registered the vehicle in Texas,” Ansonia police said in a prepared statement.

The crash happened at the intersection of Bridge and Main streets.
