Police Charge West Haven Man In Derby Domestic Rampage

DERBY — Police arrested a 25-year-old man after he allegedly climbed a balcony, attempted to break down a door, stabbed a man, punched a woman, then ran from police.

Officers were called to a residence on Fifth Street at about 11:45 p.m. Monday (April 4) after receiving a report of a domestic assault in progress.

According to police, Daniel Kayvon Estremera attempted to force his way into the residence of a woman he had been dating. He allegedly twice stabbed a man who was attempting to protect the woman Estremera was trying to get to. Estremera managed to punch the woman in the face, police said.

The stabbing victim was taken to Yale-New Haven Hospital with injuries that are not life threatening. The woman declined medical attention.

When police arrived Estremera was swinging an object at a vehicle, according to a statement from police.

Despite repeated requests to stop and drop the unknown object, Estremera ignored the officers’ orders to stop and fled the scene in a motor vehicle. Derby officers attempted to stop the vehicle and, after a short pursuit, he eluded officers,” according to the statement.

Estremera had apparently climbed a balcony to get into the woman’s residence. People in the apartment leaned against a door in an attempt to keep Estremera at bay, police said.

He was picked up a short time later at his residence in West Haven.

Estremera is charged with home invasion, two counts of second-degree assault, second-degree criminal mischief, carrying a dangerous weapon, reckless driving, engaging in pursuit, and driving an unregistered vehicle without a license.
