Shelton police arrested a Derby resident for allegedly offering to pay a 13-year-old girl for sexual favors.
Police charged Jeffrey Zelem, 46, of Kindle Lane in Derby, for attempted second-degree sexual assault, risk of injury to a minor and breach of peace.
Zelem denied the incident, according to a statement released by police on Wednesday.
The 13-year-old girl said in May she was hanging out in downtown Shelton when an unknown man approached her and offered to pay her for sexual favors.
When the girl said no, the man followed her and offered again, police said.
The man left the area when the girl met up with friends, according to the press release.
Police said they identified the man as Zelem, who admitted he was in the downtown area that day but denied offering to pay the girl for sexual favors.
Zelem is being held on a $10,000 and is scheduled to be arraigned at Superior Court in Derby on Thursday.
