OXFORD — State police are investigating two suspicious deaths in Oxford, police announced on Thursday (May 30).

Police are withholding the names of the victims.

According to a prepared statement, troopers and Oxford firefighters were sent to a car fire at 4:10 a.m. Thursday.

The initial call came in for the area of 708 Roosevelt Drive, about one minute by vehicle from the nearest volunteer fire house.

A vehicle off the road was engulfed in fire, according to police. One of the first firefighters on scene said the vehicle was near a First Light gate of the eastbound lane of Roosevelt Drive (state Route 34). First Light owns the nearby Stevenson Dam.

The fire was extinguished by FD personnel, at which point it was discovered that there were two deceased persons within the vehicle,” police said.

The Connecticut Post published a photo of the charred vehicle, which appeared to be a SUV. The publication, citing an anonymous source, said the incident is being investigated as a homicide. Click here for the story, but note it is behind a paywall.

The medical examiner’s office responded to the scene and autopsies are scheduled. The medical examiner will determine, if possible, the cause of death for the two people — and the manner of death (homicide, accident), which tells law enforcement how to proceed.

The press release from state police had no additional info.

Anyone with information should call Detective Kevin Roberts at 203 – 267-2200. Reference case # 2400210386.
