ANSONIA — Police are investigating a shooting that happened in the parking lot of a Main Street shopping center Thursday evening.

Ansonia Police Lt. Patrick Lynch said the department received several 911 calls at about 6:30 p.m. reporting shots fired in the area of 407 Main St., the shopping plaza once anchored by a Big Y.

The first officers on scene found a male suffering from a gunshot wound. He has been transported to a local hospital for treatment. His status is unknown at this point,” Lynch said at 7:45 p.m. We don’t know all the facts yet, and we’re working the scene right now.”

The man’s wounds are not life-threatening, police said.

The preliminary investigation shows that the incident may have started as a dispute between a man on a motorcycle and a man in a motor vehicle. Lynch said he couldn’t offer additional details, but police are canvassing the scene.

The shooting happened in the parking lot between Marshall’s and a stand-alone Rite Aid, Lynch said.

Police have a person from the scene detained — not arrested — but Lynch said it’s too early in the investigation to comment further.

A gun was recovered.

We know who all the involved parties are, and we’re trying to determine the sequence of events. The person who was shot is at the hospital being treated, and the other person is detained as we investigate,” Lynch said.

The shopping center is home to Marshall’s, a Bob’s Store, a hair salon, a Rite Aid, a mattress store and, during the fall, Spirit Halloween.
