Police said a 9‑year-old boy with a cigarette lighter started a fire in a bathroom at the LoPresti School last week.
The boy set a paper towel dispenser on fire. One school worker suffered smoke inhalation trying to put the small fire out.
The police department’s youth officer is investigating but no juvenile charges have resulted yet, said Lt. Paul Satkowski.
In the meantime, school officials are conducting their own review for possible disciplinary measures against the child. Board of Education Chairman Edward Strumello said the case has not resulted in an expulsion hearing at this time.
The fire caused the evacuation of the school building and the closing of three areas on the third floor, including a classroom.
