Shelton police arrested a Bridgeport man Tuesday, after he allegedly stole electronics from a car, then led police in a pursuit down Route 8.
Jimmie Bennett, 44, of Bishop Avenue in Bridgeport, was charged with second-degree criminal mischief, fifth-degree larceny, third-degree burglary, possession of burglary tools, tampering with a motor vehicle, reckless driving and engaging police in a pursuit.
Police officer Chris Nugent noticed a man looking into car windows at the parking lot of Shoreline Veterinary Hospital on Bridgeport Avenue, at about 8 p.m. Tuesday.
The man noticed Officer Nugent, and ran to his car, and started to drive away, police said in a statement released Wednesday morning.
Officer Nugent put his lights and sirens on, and followed the car onto Route 8 southbound. Police said the man would not pull over.
The driver hit a guardrail near the exit 5 off ramp on Route 8 south. He fled the scene on foot, but Bridgeport police were able to catch him, according to the Shelton police press release.
Shelton police said they recovered a laptop, wallet and camera that were reported missing from the car at the Shoreline Veterinary Hospital.
Bennett was released on a $50,000 bond and given a court date of Nov. 14 at Superior Court in Derby.
