Police: Man Caught With Gun In Ansonia

A New Haven man thought to be involved in multiple incidents” involving a handgun was arrested Wednesday after a foot chase on Main Street.

Shannon Wicker, 25, is charged with interfering with police, theft of a firearm, criminal possession of a firearm, weapons in a motor vehicle and carrying a firearm without a permit.

Those are all felonies, except the interfering charge. Wicker has pleaded not guilty, according to court records.

At about 1 a.m., two police officers — Officer Philip Landona and Officer Patrick Tirella — were doing radar surveillance on Main Street when they saw a vehicle traveling at a high rate of speed, according to information provided by Lt. Andrew Cota.

Cops stopped the vehicle but Wicker, a passenger, ran away down Main Street, police said.

Officer Tirella recognized Wicker as a man identified by area police as being involved in multiple incidents involving” a gun in Ansonia and other towns,” according to police.

Officer Tirella was able to catch up to the male behind the Main Street Shell Gas Station and took the male into custody,” Cota said in a prepared statement.

Ansonia police then requested Seymour’s police dog come to the scene to search for a weapon Wicker was thought to be carrying.

The dog and its handler, Officer Romagna, found a .380 caliber handgun behind a building on Main Street.

A check of the firearm revealed that it had been reported stolen in New Haven,” Cota said.

Wicker was being held on a $100,000 bond. He’s due in court April 1.

There have been two fatal shootings in Ansonia recently. Police said at this point Wicker is not a suspect in those shootings.
