Two people were arrested for burglary and larceny charges after allegedly stealing used car batteries from the Shelton Wal-Mart, then leading Shelton Police on a car chase Friday afternoon — all with an infant in the car.
Police on Friday arrested Peter Burnwell, 40, of New Haven, and Christina Turey, 36, of West Haven.
Turey’s infant daughter was in the back seat of her Chevrolet Impala when the pair allegedly backed the car up to an outside recycling area at the Shelton Wal-Mart, according to Shelton Police Lt. Robert Kozlowsky.
Burnwell is accused of cutting through a fence to access the area where used batteries are stored on the site. Kozlowsky said the batteries have a small trade-in value at Wal-Mart and other car dealerships.
A security guard noticed Burnwell leaving the gated recycling area, and getting into the car.
The guard called Shelton police, who tried to pull over the Impala.
Turey allegedly pulled a U‑turn on Old Stratford Road to avoid getting pulled over, before getting on Route 8.
She eventually did pull over her car for police, near exit 12 on Route 8, Kozlowsky said.
Police found about 20 used car batteries in the car, according to Kozlowsky.
Police charged Burnwell with third-degree burglary, fourth-degree criminal mischief, risk of injury to a minor, possession of burglary tools and possession of drug paraphernalia.
Turey was charged with conspiracy to commit fourth-degree larceny, conspiracy at criminal mischief, engaging police in a pursuit, misuse of license plates, conspiracy at third-degree burglary and risk of injury to a minor.
Kozlowsky said the infant daughter was not injured during the short chase.
